What to see文化看點

The City God was an official cult, and a temple’s rank followed the rank of the place: Jieyang was a county, so the temple is built as a county temple. Founded in 1369 and rebuilt many times since. The point is inside the door: gilt woodcarving laid over the beams layer upon layer, and that density is what this temple has.

History歷史

In Rongcheng, founded in 1369 and rebuilt since. Local accounts call it the best preserved, largest and most finely worked City God temple left in Guangdong. Listed in 2019 in the eighth batch of national protected sites.

Craft工藝

  • Gilt woodcarving: beams, shrines, doors and windows all covered, the subjects running from opera scenes to flowers, birds and auspicious beasts; the density is rare among Chaoshan temples.
  • Plan: gate, worship pavilion, main hall in that order, and the worship pavilion is the best place for the carving — you only have to look up.
  • Stonework: column bases, door drums, stone balustrades, to be read against the wood.

PeoplePeople

The City God is an office, not a person; but the temple was built and repaired by people. Five hundred years of offerings have not stopped, and the repair inscriptions of successive generations are scattered under the beams and on the steles — readable as a local gazetteer.

What to look at看什麼

  • The beams over the worship pavilion: stand still and look up, layer by layer.
  • The shrines and the plaques: read the characters and the carving both.
  • The door drums and the lions: hands off, eyes on.

The City God and the official cult城隍與官祀

The City God is the guardian of a city, but through the Ming and Qing he was also part of the official cult. The early Ming fixed the system: a temple in the capital, in every prefecture, department and county; in 1370 the titles were dropped and the god was simply ‘the City God of such a place’. A magistrate on taking office called at the temple as a matter of course, and oaths were sworn here over disasters and over lawsuits.

So this temple is not a folk shrine put up by villagers but one entered in the register of sacrifices. Its order — gate, worship pavilion, hall — and the order of a magistracy answer each other.

The carving as a storybook木雕的敘事密度

The gilt carving here carries an unusual density of subject for a Chaoshan temple: beams, shrines, doors and windows covered, opera scenes, flowers and birds, auspicious beasts and antiquarian objects layered over one another. The worship pavilion is the place to read it — stand still and look up, layer by layer.

Such ornament is not only for looking at. A temple is a public room, and the carving was a storybook for people who could not read: loyalty and filial piety, cause and consequence, all cut in the direction you look up.
