Three days in Chaoshan: the shape of the three cities, film locations on the way

Three days, three cities, one day each, two crossings. Chaozhou for Paifang Street and Xiangzi Bridge; Jieyang for Jinxian Gate, the Confucian temple and the City God temple; Shantou for Xiaogongyuan, the sea and the food. Several film locations happen to fall on the line.

Route at a glance

Trip facts and effort

Suggested time3 day
Base One night Chaozhou and one Shantou; two cross-city legs
Walking Moderate to heavy: 7 to 10 km a day, with steps and hill paths on the third
Transport load One early start; climbing optional; no boats
Depends on Cross-city departures and the third day’s return train; whether Guangji Bridge is open
Main risk Rushing the return train spoils both ends of the third day
Most likely to go wrong Cramming Jieyang Tower and Huangqi Shan into day three, and missing the train
Good for A first visit with two nights
Elders and children Tight. Steps and hill paths on day three are hard for elders, and children need their nap counted

Distances and effort are this site’s estimates on level ground; steps and hill paths count separately. Cross-city legs assume the default base and route order, and exclude transfers to and from Chaoshan. Live conditions follow the official word that day.

Details and tailoring

Transport and time

Two crossings of 45—60 minutes each; walking inside cities, fifteen minutes at most between the Jieyang triangle. One main cluster a day (4—5 hours) plus an add-on (1—2 hours), with an hour on the road. The end depends on your return station: from Chaoshan station, finish in Chaozhou or Jieyang; from Shantou station, finish in Shantou. The three city centres are 30 km apart at the closest (Chaozhou—Jieyang), then 40 km (Shantou—Chaozhou) and 47 km (Shantou—Jieyang).

Party and stamina: what to drop

Timings below are per day and are estimates. What you drop becomes somewhere to sit, not another stop.

  • Driving Two crossings in three days make a car a burden. Take the train to Chaoshan station, use taxis inside cities, and go straight from Jieyang back to the station on day three. If driving, leave the car at the hotel and use it once, on the third day.
  • With elders On day three walk only the triangle: Confucian temple, City God temple, Jinxian Gate. Drop Jieyang Tower and Huangqi Shan, which is a climb. Keep one cluster a day and move the add-on to day two.
  • With children Keep the sea for day two, and walk the arcade street on day three as shade. The main hall of the Confucian temple is fine to enter, but do not expect children to read steles.
  • Coming for the film Xima Road sits at the west end of day three; Xiaogongyuan and Dongli in Chenghai on day two; Longhu old village in Chaozhou needs another half day and does not fit in three.

Main line and optional stops

The triangle of Confucian temple, City God temple and Jinxian Gate is the main line; the Ancient Banyan temple and Ding Guanglu Hall are add-ons whose loss does not affect it. For the Chaozhou and Shantou days, copy the two lines from One day.

What to eat on the way

Three more for Jieyang: pingpong kueh, Longjiang pork trotter rice and pounded tea, east of the Confucian temple and along Xima Road. The food lists for all three cities are at Chaozhou, Shantou, Jieyang the end of those three pages.

Risks and checks

  • With a train to catch on day three, walk the triangle only, no add-ons.
  • If the Confucian temple is closed for works or an event, switch to the City God temple and Xima Road.
  • In rain, cut day three’s outdoor stretch to the arcade street: Zhongshan Road has a covered walk.

Three things to check again before setting off (live information; the official word of the day governs): your return station and last train (from Chaoshan station, end in Chaozhou or Jieyang; from Shantou station, end in Shantou); the opening hours of the first stop each day; road conditions on the two days you cross cities.
