Call for materialCALL FOR MATERIALS

We collect, on an ongoing basis, photographs of custom in the Chaoshan region, documentary material and written pieces, for the archive and for display on the site. If you see a page that is wrong or has something missing, or you hold a lead, just write — it need not be a finished article.

What we collect: old photographs of custom; field photographs (the ritual year, rites of life, traditional dress, ritual embroidery); hand-copied custom manuscripts; scanned illustrations from old books.

Area covered: the whole of today’s Chaozhou, Shantou and Jieyang — the seven core counties of the old Chaozhou prefecture: Haiyang, Chaoyang, Jieyang, Raoping, Chenghai, Puning and Huilai. Dabu and Fengshun belonged to the same prefecture in the Qing and are now under Meizhou; material on them may be submitted, marked as within-prefecture comparison, and is not treated as a core entry.

Two licensing optionsTWO OPTIONS

Option A | Display on this site only (recommended)

You grant this site a non-exclusive, non-commercial right to show the material on its web pages. The site credits you by name and does not sub-licence, redistribute or alter the material. All copyright stays with you, and you remain free to publish it elsewhere. This grant carries no commercial rights, and no permission to download or adapt.

Option B | Non-commercial display here, with a share of any commercial fee

On the same terms as Option A, except that if a third party later applies for a commercial licence, this site may act as intermediary and divide the fee in the proportion agreed when you submitted. That proportion has to be written down at submission; if it is not, Option A applies.

Neither option puts the material under a Creative Commons licence. Images here are never CC-licensed — that is a standing rule: text is open, images are reserved. Credits for images already held are listed under image credits and licences.

Before you submitBEFORE YOU SUBMIT

  • The material must be your own work, or you must hold the copyright and the right to license it.
  • Close-up portraits need the consent of the person photographed; for anyone under eighteen, the consent of a guardian.
  • Please be cautious with funeral imagery. The site prefers objects and documents, and does not carry many close-ups of people.
  • Material from god processions and sacrifices involves religious and lineage premises; state whether permission to photograph on the site was obtained.
  • Please include: a short description, the date and place of the photograph, which licensing option you choose, and how you wish to be credited.
  • Written pieces and leads do not need a licensing option at all — just say which page, and what source you rely on.

Privacy noticePRIVACY NOTICE

The name, contact details and licence you give us are used to establish ownership, to discuss licensing, and to divide any fee.

  • What is collected: the name or pen name used for credit, an email address or phone number, and what the licence document says.
  • How long it is kept: for as long as the licence runs. Within six months of the licence ending, contact details are deleted and only the licence record is kept, for ownership enquiries.
  • Who sees it: the editors of this site, and legal advisers where necessary.
  • Not public: contact details are never published on the site and are not passed to third parties, except where the law requires it.
  • Withdrawal: you may ask at any time to withdraw the licence and have the published material and your contact details removed; this is done within fifteen working days of the request.

Submitting means you have read and agree to this notice. If you do not, please do not submit.

Credit and liabilityCREDIT

In return: a credit line, an optional author page, and permanent archiving in the folk-custom knowledge base. Under Option B, a share of commercial fees as agreed.

Liability: if ownership of submitted material is disputed, responsibility rests with the person who submitted it. Where ownership is unclear, the site takes the material down first and keeps a record.

Submissions: chirca@163.com. The six points under “Before you submit” are enough to start with. To ask about progress, or just to talk it over first, the contact page has WeChat, WhatsApp and a phone number. There is no postal address yet: if you need to send an original, an object or a signed licence on paper, write first and we will arrange how.
