Half a day in Chaoshan: one loop inside one city
Half a day reaches only one patch of one city. Choose the Chaozhou old city or Xiaogongyuan in Shantou; a cross-city leg costs 45—60 minutes each way, and the round trip eats most of the half day.

Trip facts and effort
Distances and effort are this site’s estimates on level ground; steps and hill paths count separately. Cross-city legs assume the default base and route order, and exclude transfers to and from Chaoshan. Live conditions follow the official word that day.
Route flow
Chaozhou line (enter at the north end of Paifang Street)
Guangji Bridgewalk 10 minPaifang Streetwalk 5 minKaiyuan Temple
Shantou line (start at the Xiaogongyuan pavilion)
Xiaogongyuan pavilionwalk 8 minArcade streetwalk 20 minXidi Park
Jieyang line (start at Jinxian Gate; smoother if you land at Jieyang Airport)
Jinxian Gatewalk 8 minConfucian templewalk 6 minCity God Temple
The three lines sit in three cities and do not chain. Chaozhou and Shantou carry more stops; Jieyang is the shortest, fifteen minutes on foot from the Confucian temple to the City God temple, for people with only half a day there.
Time budget
| Item | Half day | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Net sightseeing | 2.5—3 hours | Three stops, including entering the bridge, walking it and the temple interior |
| Travel | about 30 min | Two in-town legs of 10 min each; the rest is walking between stops |
| Eating | 30—60 min | Around Paifang Street or Xiaogongyuan; sitting down costs about half an hour more than takeaway |
| Buffer | 30 min | Queues, finding the way, last-minute changes |
| Total | 4—5 hours | With three hours only, halve eating and buffer, and cut to two stops |
Details and tailoring
Transport and time
Stops take 2.5—3 hours, two walks of ten minutes each, plus a meal. All on foot, the longest leg under 1.5 km, returning to the start. Crossing the Han River in Chaozhou is not part of a half day: the east bank needs a vehicle. Arriving in the afternoon, do the bridge first and shop after: in summer Guangji Bridge stops admission at 17:00 and boarding at 17:30, and after that you look from the river bank.
Party and stamina: what to drop
Timings below assume half a day and are estimates. What you drop is replaced by somewhere to sit, not by another walk.
- Driving Do not drive into the old city on a half day. Chaozhou old city and the Xiaogongyuan area are one-way streets and pedestrian zones, and finding parking eats a third of the time. Set the satnav for a public car park outside the gate, not for the name of the site: site names often lead to the pedestrian entrance.
- With elders Three stops become two, no more than a kilometre apart. In Chaozhou take Kaiyuan Temple to Paifang Street, sitting inside the temple on the way; in Shantou stay around the pavilion, where there are many seats. Drop the bridge, the hill and the sea crossing.
- With children Give a half day one place where hands can work: Gongfucha, a hand-pulled teapot, kueh. Children take about an hour of looking at buildings; attention falls off clearly after that.
- Alone or in a hurry Keep one stop: the bridge in Chaozhou, the pavilion in Shantou, done in an hour.
Main line and optional stops
In Chaozhou the bridge and Paifang Street are the main line, with Kaiyuan Temple possibly seen from the gate; in Shantou the pavilion and the arcade street, with Xidi Park optional; in Jieyang Jinxian Gate and the Confucian temple, with the City God temple depending on time.
What to eat on the way
Chaozhou: braised goose, beef balls and kueh noodles around Paifang Street. Shantou: fish balls and late congee around Xiaogongyuan. Jieyang: pingpong kueh near Jinxian Gate. The food lists are at Chaozhou, Shantou, Jieyang the end of those three pages.
Risks and checks
- If Guangji Bridge stops selling tickets or the queue is long, look at it across the river and walk the Han River bank instead.
- In rain, switch to Kaiyuan Temple and Jilue Huang Hall, both with eaves to shelter under.
- With under two hours, keep one stop; do not force three.
Three things to check again before setting off (live information; the official word of the day governs): Guangji Bridge hours that day (in summer, admission stops at 17:00 and boarding at 17:30); the last bus or last ferry back; rain and heat warnings for the day. If any one of the three fails, swap this route for another in the same city.
