Shangrao, swinging

The twenty-sixth of the first month, at Shangrao in Raoping, Chaozhou: swinging. What is publicly visible of it is the day, the place and the name, and nothing more.

1. The three things that are settled

The day: the twenty-sixth of the first month. The place: Shangrao, Raoping, Chaozhou. The name: swinging.

Raoping lies in the hills east of Chaozhou, on the border with Zhao’an in Fujian. New-year swinging is not rare in the villages along that border, but each county and each village does it differently, and the scene elsewhere cannot be put on this one.

Year Lunar date Gregorian
2027 26th of the 1st month 3 March 2027, Wednesday
2028 26th of the 1st month 20 February 2028, Sunday
2029 26th of the 1st month 10 March 2029, Saturday
2030 26th of the 1st month 28 February 2030, Thursday
2031 26th of the 1st month 17 February 2031, Monday

The Gregorian column is a calendar conversion and does not mean it will be held that way; no announcement for 2027 or later has been seen.

2. Where to stand, in general and not by this session’s rules

Three points only: stand to the side of the frame, not in front of the swing; do not let children on a frame nobody is watching; it gets dark early in the hills, so go early and come back early. These are suggestions made here from sessions of the same kind, not the rules of this session’s organisers.

3. Sources

Source Body Date What it establishes
Local reporting and accounts of custom no institution found none found the day and the name only

This entry rests on a second-hand account; there is no original that can be opened.

4. What comes next

In lunar order: before it, the Qinglong temple fair on the twenty-fourth; after it, the Chaoyang Shuangzhong festival, whose day is chosen in the second month. Also in Chaozhou is Xikou, through the sugarcane lanes.

Elsewhere on the site: the ritual year, Chaozhou routes, ying lao ye: its form and the village days.
