Guandai, the birthday of the Dark Heaven Emperor
On the third of the third month the four villages of Guanyi township at Guandai, in Longhu, Shantou, keep the birthday of the Lord Emperor: welcoming the god, a great opera, the offering of robes, and a rite of universal peace. The date was not always in the third month — the tour of the thirty-six villages used to set out on the sixth of the ninth month and return to the temple on the ninth, and only later moved to the third of the third.
1. The date was moved from the ninth month
In Chaoshan the Dark Heaven Emperor is mostly called Lord Emperor, or the Northern Emperor; at Guandai he is called the Great Lord. By the old custom, the ninth of the ninth month is the day of his attainment, and every year the Guandai god set out on the sixth of the ninth month to tour the thirty-six villages of Guandai (the present Longxiang, Xinjin and Zhuchi country), receiving the worship of each, and on the ninth went round his own village and back into the temple.
It broke off during the Cultural Revolution. After reform and opening, the Ji clan of the thirty villages of Guandai and the notable men of the other clans subscribed to repair the temple and held a consecration, and the villages then agreed to move the celebration to the third of the third month, the birthday of the Dark Heaven Emperor. The ninth of the ninth was given up for it.
2. How it is done now
Each year the four villages of Guanyi township run it: welcoming the god, a great opera, the offering of robes, and a rite of universal peace for blessing. Every twelve years the thirty villages of Guandai hold it together, and on top of the usual programme the temple is repaired and the image regilded.
The temple stands behind the Fulong village gate on the central street of Guandaitou; first built in the late Ming or early Qing, it is now a protected heritage site of Longhu district, about fifty square metres in floor area, with a thousand-square-metre cultural square and opera stage to its left. The gateway carries a stone plaque reading “Temple of the Lord Emperor”; a pair of stone drums stands on either side of the worship pavilion, a flagpole base and flagpole to the north-east, and an altar to the Lord of Heavenly Favour to the south-east. The temple is small, and the stone carving, woodcarving and porcelain mosaic are all there.

The Gregorian column is a calendar conversion, not a promise that the year will be kept so. The third of the third month is a fixed day, but which year is kept on the grand scale — the thirty villages together, once in twelve — is a question for the village, and is not forecast here.
3. Who keeps it
The temple was originally the guardian god of the Ji clan of Guandai; worship later spread to more than thirty villages and surnames in the area, with branch temples at Nanbibu, Jiahe, Donghe and Xincuoliao. One account has it that in a year of great drought in Chaoshan the clan elders asked the Dark Heaven Emperor through the planchette where to dig for a spring, struck water, and were told to share it with every surname in the area; from then on all the surnames worshipped together.
The lists: the temple is a protected heritage site of Longhu district; the event itself has no heritage list entry.
4. Where to stand
As past accounts describe it
The third of the third is the Dark Heaven Emperor’s birthday, and on that day the temples to him across Chaoshan have the heaviest incense; offering tables carry red peach cakes, risen cakes, sweet cakes, the five victims, sugar lions and mandarins. Some villages also hold a tour of the territory, with yingge clearing the way, great gongs and drums, banner-flag teams and cloth-horse dance following the palanquin, households setting out incense tables along the route.
An editorial note
The Guandai temple is inside the village and the square is not large; on the nights of the opera people pack in before the stage. The village roads are narrow, so park outside and walk in. These three are this site’s reminders, not the rules of the organisers or the police.
Getting there: the nearest high-speed station is Shantou; Guandai is in Longhu district, north-east of the city centre, about twenty minutes by taxi. On opera nights everyone leaves at once, so check the way back against that year’s timetable rather than reasoning from past experience.

6. What comes next
Also in the third month is carrying Mazu, on the twenty-third. For the second-month sessions before it see Outing, the dengshou lantern head and Zhanglin, escorting the fire god. For how the Dark Heaven Emperor relates in form to the yinglaoye rite, see yinglaoye: form and village days.
